Frequently asked questions

What do I need to use Nappuccino?

An Apple Watch with watchOS 11 or later, paired with an iPhone running iOS 18 or later. Naps run on the Watch; the iPhone app shows your history and trends.

How does “Detect sleep” work?

After you start a nap, your Watch records wrist motion and heart rate. Once you have been still and your heart rate has dropped below your resting level, Nappuccino marks the moment you fell asleep and starts the nap timer from there. If you don't fall asleep within the time you allow (5–15 minutes), the timer starts anyway, so a nap can never run forever. The “by …” time on the screen is the latest you will be woken.

What is a coffee nap?

Drink a coffee, then nap for about 20 minutes. Caffeine takes roughly that long to kick in, so it starts working just as you wake up, while the nap has already cleared some of the sleepiness. In Nappuccino, drink your coffee and start a 20-minute Fixed timer nap, or just say “Start a coffee nap in Nappuccino” to Siri. More in our coffee nap guide.

Why didn't the alarm ring exactly “nap length” after I fell asleep?

watchOS doesn't let apps run continuously in the background, so Nappuccino sometimes notices that you fell asleep a minute or two after the fact. The alarm is then set from the moment you actually fell asleep, which can shift it slightly. It never rings later than the “by …” time. With smart wake on, it may also ring a little early if you are already in light sleep.

Will naps count toward my Activity rings?

No. In the standard mode, Nappuccino doesn't start a workout, so naps don't add exercise minutes or calories. If you switch tracking to Precise heart rate in the Watch settings, Nappuccino uses a workout session for continuous heart-rate readings, and watchOS counts that time toward your rings.

The alarm was quiet or only vibrated. What can I check?

If your Watch is in Silent mode, the alarm uses haptics only. Make sure notifications for Nappuccino are allowed (Watch app on iPhone → Notifications). A Focus such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep can silence the backup notifications. We also recommend leaving Settings → General → Return to Clock at the default (2 minutes) for Nappuccino, so the Watch can keep the nap running in the background.

How long can a nap be?

Between 5 and 30 minutes of sleep. Short naps of 10–25 minutes are the sweet spot: long enough to recharge, short enough to wake up before deep sleep.

How do I change Health permissions?

On iPhone, open the Health app → your profile picture → Privacy → Apps → Nappuccino. This covers Nappuccino on your Apple Watch too. Nappuccino needs heart rate to detect sleep; saving naps to Health as sleep is optional.

How do I delete my data?

Deleting Nappuccino from your iPhone and Apple Watch removes your nap history. Naps that were saved to Apple Health can be deleted in the Health app under Browse → Sleep → Show All Data. See our Privacy Policy for details.
